As I announced in my previous journal entry, I finally caved and decided to watch Primeval: New World. Short version: it's not as bad as I was expecting it to be, but that doesn't mean I'm saying it's good. I hadn't expected much, anyway, when I decided to give it a watch. Already knowing it's not being renewed for a second season, I figured it's low ratings resulted from either being bad enough that nobody watched it or good enough that everybody pirated it. After watching it for myself, I'm betting on the former. Granted, this is coming from a long-time Primeval fan (since 2008, around the time Series 2 was airing on British television IIRC) who segregates the first two series of the original British show into their own fanon; so maybe I'm biased, but I feel I have a right to be.

The most severe issue I noticed was that the plot had a rough initiation. The characters weren't adequately developed until about the fifth episode, and the story-progressing episodes were struggling between several filler episodes (especially towards the beginning of the season, which in my opinion is why the entire series received such low ratings: there was too much filler too early and it was undoubtedly a turnoff to many viewers who weren't in it for the creatures). Speaking of the creatures...

No, I'm not going there.

I actually liked New World. Was a hell of a lot better than series 4 & 5 of the original anyway. Much better CGI as well from an animation/compositing standpoint. You're right about too many fillers though, the series would likely have done a huge amount better if it had had maybe half the number of episodes. Ep 5 was the point when I started liking it and it just got better from there (a few episodes aside *cough*BabesInTheWoods*cough*), but had I not been a fan of the original I probably wouldn't have stuck with it until then.

:lmao:, "No, I'm not going there.".

Yeah, I'm one of those people that's in it just for the creatures, because the story didn't really hit me. Even so, I'm not going near New World.

Ha, I guess that was a reasonable reaction knowing you. And out of the creatures, which do you think was worst?

Biased fanaticism aside, the Ornitholestes. That whole episode (Babes in the Woods) was lame, actually. It's purpose was to aid in Toby's character development, which it not only failed at accomplishing but I don't recall it contributing anything to the storyline either. Babes in the Woods could have been hacked from the season and it wouldn't have affected anything. The only other significant element in the episode was it's pro-homosexuality message. I'll be honest, what does a science fiction show about dinosaurs and the space-time continuum care about contemporary social issues other than being politically correct? Answer: nothing.

Heh, I've heard that was one of the less popular episodes actually.

Maybe if they'd left it out the show wouldn't have been canceled. =P
